Sperm Freezing
Fertility Pathways
Sperm Freezing involves a sample being collected, tested and cryopreserved.
-
Men with naturally low or declining sperm counts or poor sperm quality can freeze a sample while it's still viable.
Men who are recommended to have a Surgical Sperm Retrieval (SSR). The sample is often then frozen for future use.
Men undergoing medical treatments like chemotherapy, or radiotherapy may freeze sperm before the treatment begins, as these procedures can significantly reduce or eliminate their fertility.
Freezing provides a backup if a man anticipates having difficulty producing a sample on the day of fertility treatment.
Individuals may choose to freeze sperm to preserve their fertility if they are unsure if they want to have children immediately but may decide to in the future. This can include preparing for active military duty, having a vasectomy but wanting a safety net, or for other health conditions that might affect fertility.
People undergoing hormone replacement therapy or gender-affirming surgery may freeze sperm to preserve their options for having biological children in the future.
-
Sperm collection at the clinic laboratory. This is typically after a period of 2 days abstinence.
-
Blood tests to screen for infectious diseases.
Semen analysis to assess its concentration (million/ml), progressive motility (%) and morphology (% normal forms).
-
Cryopreservation - The viable sperm is then frozen in liquid nitrogen at extremely low temperatures (-196°C), which halts their biological activity.
-
Storage of semen - The semen is then stored until required. Your sample can stay safely frozen for up to 55 years, as long as you complete consent forms every ten years. If you ever decide to use your frozen sample in the future, it will be safely thawed and then ready to use in various fertility treatments, including IVF and IUI.
“I first met Lynne at the then newly opened IVI Fertility Clinic in London. I had been asked to update the clinic on aspects of Male Fertility, and Lynne was interested. This was 10 years ago, when most gynaecologists did not recognise that the diagnosis and treatment of the male factor was significant. So. I referred some couples, and was very impressed by the feedback… good outcomes , and a more personal approach, providing consistency and support. Since then we have managed many couples, often involving surgical sperm retrievals on the same day as the egg retrieval at The Lister. I know how much our patients value seeing familiar faces on “the day”.”
