Conditions & Pathways
Secondary Infertility
Secondary infertility effects approximately 1 in 20 couples and is defined as the inability to conceive a child after having at least one previous pregnancy. It is routinely overlooked or downplayed by government health care and fertility providers but can be as emotionally debilitating as primary infertility.
It can be caused by factors affecting either partner, such as age, lifestyle changes, infections, or conditions like endometriosis, PCOS or endometrial polyps. Diagnosis and treatment are similar to those for primary infertility.
Weight gain or weight loss can affect fertility, causing hormone imbalance, contributing to irregular periods and ovulation difficulties. Weight problems also affect male hormones and fragmentation of the sperm.
In both men and women, age plays a significant role. Female fertility peaks at age 25 and drops after the age of 35. Men, like women, also have a biological clock which means that their fertility can decline from the age of 40.
A significant proportion of all LCRH’s new patients suffer from secondary infertility and we are highly sensitive to their needs.

“Despite the setbacks, Lynne and the LCRH team left no stone unturned. Our daughter is now a happy, playful little character with a voice like a foghorn and a growing love for her first foods.”
