September is PMOS Awareness Month
In May this year, it was agreed by a group of leading global medical, research and patient advocate groups to rename PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) as PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome).
Why? The polycystic term has always been a misinterpretation of the situation. These are actually tiny, fluid-filled sacs (usually 2 to 9 mm in diameter) that naturally house immature eggs inside the ovaries. These are not painful nor pathological and do not need surgical intervention. They are also only part of a larger picture.
This month is PMOS Awareness month, a time for shared awareness and education of the condition and symptoms of PMOS, which can impact fertility, cause irregular or infrequent periods, as well as mood changes, weight gain acne, hair growth, pain and fatigue.
